It means that:
1. Yes, holders of an Australian driving license can drive in Michigan, USA. According to the information provided, Michigan allows drivers from treaty countries to legally drive in the state with a foreign driver's license, provided that the license is printed in English or accompanied by an English translation. Since Australia is listed among the treaty countries and the Australian license is written in English, an Australian driving license holder would be permitted to drive in Michigan under these conditions.
2. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required for Australian license holders to drive in Michigan. The reason for this conclusion is that Michigan law specifies that a foreign driver's license is acceptable if it is in English or accompanied by an English translation. Since the Australian driving license is already in English and includes all necessary information, an IDP, which primarily serves as a translation document, is not necessary for Australians driving in Michigan. Furthermore, the Australian license complies with international conventions to which Australia is a party, reinforcing its acceptability without the need for an additional IDP.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
