The laws in USA-Alaska say the following:
You are welcome to drive in Alaska if you are at least 16 years old and have a valid driver license from another state, US Territory, or country. If you will be driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you must get an Alaska driver license.

It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in USA-Alaska without an International Driving Permit.
2. You will not need an International Driving Permit to drive in USA-Alaska with your Australian license.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
