The laws in Malta say the following:

Driving licences issued in Australia, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates (only in case of Maltese or UAW nationals), can also be exchanged for a Maltese driving licence. It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in Malta without an International Driving Permit for a period not exceeding twelve months from the date of your last entry into Malta.
2. However, if you plan to stay in Malta for more than twelve months, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit in addition to your Australian driving license.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
