The laws in Germany say the following:
If you hold a driving licence from a state that is not a member of the EU or the EEA, this licence will be valid for six months after you have established your normal residence in the Federal Republic of Germany. After this period, your driving licence will no longer be recognized.

It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in Germany without an International Driving Permit for the first six months after establishing your normal residence in Germany.
2. After the initial six-month period, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit in addition to your Australian driving license to continue driving in Germany.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
