The laws in Croatia say the following:
Article 225 of the Law on Road Traffic Safety (OG 67/08, 48/10 - Decision of the USRH, 74/11, 80/13 and 158/13 - Decision of the USRH, 92/14, 64/15, 108/17, 70 /19, 42/20, 85/22 and 114/22) it is prescribed that a foreigner who has been granted temporary or permanent residence in the Republic of Croatia and a Croatian citizen who returns to the Republic of Croatia from abroad, as well as the staff of diplomatic and consular missions and foreign missions the state and representative offices of international organizations in the Republic of Croatia, foreign commercial, transport, cultural and other representative offices and foreign correspondents can drive motor vehicles on the basis of a valid foreign driver's license for a period of up to one year from the day of entry into the Republic of Croatia.
Foreign driver's license for driving D1 or D category motor vehicles will not be recognized for persons under 24 years of age, for C category 21 years, C1 and B category 18 years of age.

It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in Croatia without an International Driving Permit.
2. You will not need an International Driving Permit to drive in Croatia.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
