The laws in Colombia say the following:
In relation to foreign driving licenses, article 25 of Law 769 of 2002 establishes that driving licenses issued in another country that are valid and that are used by tourists or people in transit in the national territory, will be valid and admitted to drive in Colombia during the authorized stay of its holder, in accordance with international provisions on the matter.

It means that:
1. Yes, you can drive in Colombia with your Australian driving license without an International Driving Permit.
2. According to the rules stated in article 25 of Law 769 of 2002, your valid Australian driving license will be accepted in Colombia during your authorized stay, in accordance with international provisions on the matter. Therefore, you will not need an International Driving Permit to drive in Colombia.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
