The laws in Canada-Nova Scotia say the following:
Visitors or Newcomers who have a valid driver's licence from another part of Canada, or from another country, can drive in Nova Scotia for up to 90 days without getting a Nova Scotia Driver's Licence. After that, you need a Nova Scotia licence

It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in Canada-Nova Scotia without an International Driving Permit for up to 90 days.
2. After the initial 90-day period, you will need to obtain a Nova Scotia Driver's Licence to continue driving in Nova Scotia. Therefore, you will not require an International Driving Permit, but rather a Nova Scotia licence.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
