The laws in Canada-Alberta say the following:
If you are driving in Alberta with your foreign driver’s licence, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an IDP from your home jurisdiction before coming to Alberta.

It means that:
1. As a holder of a driving license from Australia, you can drive in Canada-Alberta without an International Driving Permit (IDP).
2. However, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an IDP from your home jurisdiction before coming to Alberta, even though it is not mandatory.
Different rental agencies might still require an IDP even while the local laws do not require it. Please find your appropriate local supplier in the list above to verify.
